Overview
GO transit watch helps you browse GO train and GO bus schedules, plan routes with Find Route, follow Union Station and UP Express departures, explore the GO network map, share trips, and track trains with Live Activities and widgets across iPhone, iPad, and CarPlay. We collect only the minimum information needed to provide those features, and no account is required to use the app.
What the app accesses
- Location: only when you enable nearby station sorting, automatic departure-station suggestions, or a Commute Routine.
- Calendar: only when you tap Add to Calendar for a trip.
- Notifications and Live Activities: only when you create trip reminders, track a train, or set up a Commute Routine.
- Subscription status: checked through Apple's StoreKit APIs to unlock GO transit watch Pro features.
Live train tracking & Live Activities
When you track a train, the app registers a single-use Apple push token for that Live Activity with our own update server (not a third-party ad or analytics network). That server checks Metrolinx's live schedule for your specific trip and sends Lock Screen, Dynamic Island, and CarPlay updates while the app is closed. The token and trip details (stations, scheduled time) are used only to deliver that trip's updates, are never linked to your name or Apple ID, and are discarded once the trip ends or you stop tracking.
Line and station alert notifications
When you opt into line or station service alerts, the app sends an APNs device token, a random installation identifier, your selected line/station codes, and delivery fingerprints to our update server. These are used only to send matching service notifications while the app is closed and prevent duplicates. Disabling these alerts removes the active subscription when the app next connects. Subscription and delivery records expire after six months without an app refresh; no name, Apple ID, or device location is included.
Data issue reports
If you choose to report a data issue on a trip, the app sends the issues you selected, any notes you type, that trip's schedule, live status, platform and stop details, your app version, iOS version and device model, and the app's diagnostics log to our update server, which forwards it to our private team Discord. We use it only to investigate and fix transit data problems. Nothing is sent unless you tap send, and your name, email and location are not included.
Feature Requests board
Submitting or upvoting an idea on the in-app Feature Requests board stores the request text and an anonymous, random device identifier (via Firebase Anonymous Authentication) in our Firebase database, so other riders can see and vote on open ideas. New requests are also forwarded to our private team Discord so we see feedback quickly. Please don't include personal information in a request, as the text is visible to other users of the app.
Product analytics & session replay
Product analytics are enabled by default and can be turned off at any time using Share usage analytics in Settings. The app sends manually recorded screen views and limited feature events (such as paywall views, selected plans, completed or cancelled purchase attempts, saved trips, train tracking, and reminders) to PostHog so we can understand which features are useful and improve the app. Events use a random installation identifier and may include basic app and device information.
While analytics are on, we also record anonymized session replays to find confusing screens and bugs. A replay is a wireframe of the app's layout with all text and images masked, plus where you tapped. It does not capture what you type, readable screen text, photos, network requests, or console logs.
We do not send your name, email, precise location, route searches, station choices, or trip identifiers through this analytics integration, and we've turned off PostHog's IP-based location lookup. We do not use analytics for advertising or cross-app tracking, and automatic tap-event capture and automatic error capture are disabled. PostHog retains this data for up to one year on its free plan.
To request deletion of analytics data associated with your installation, contact [email protected] and include the app version and approximate dates when you used the app.
Sharing a trip
Sharing a trip creates a link containing only public route details (stations, line, and time), never your location or identity. Link previews are rendered by our own preview service before handing off to the app or this website.
No advertising or cross-app tracking
- The app does not use an advertising SDK.
- The app does not use data to track you across other companies’ apps or websites for advertising.
- The app does not intentionally track users across apps or websites for advertising.
Who we share data with
- Metrolinx Open Data: public schedule, live departure, and service alert requests (no personal data attached).
- Apple: StoreKit purchase/subscription status and push delivery for notifications and Live Activities.
- Firebase (Google): anonymous Feature Requests board storage only, as described above.
- PostHog: product analytics and masked session replays as described above; you can turn them off in Settings.
- Our own servers and private team Discord: Live Activity updates, opted-in line/station alert notifications, and user-submitted data issue reports, as described above.
We do not share data with advertising or marketing companies. Analytics data is not used to target advertising or identify you by name.
Android waitlist
If you join the Android waitlist on our website, we collect your email address and the date of your signup, together with your consent to receive Android launch updates. These details are delivered through our server to a private team Discord channel. Discord processes and stores the signup message as our service provider. We use your email only for updates about GO transit watch for Android.
To reduce spam and repeat submissions, our server stores a one-way hash of your email for 30 days and a short-lived hash of your IP address for rate limiting in Cloudflare storage. We do not include your IP address in the Discord message.
To leave the waitlist or request deletion of your signup, email [email protected] from the address you signed up with. We retain your signup until the Android launch updates are complete or you ask us to remove it.
Children's privacy
GO transit watch is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
